Abstract

Ginger has been shown to have a positive effect on the weight of the male reproductive organs and increased sperm parameters of the testis. The aim of the present study was to investigate the effects of ethanolic ginger extract on the histology (morphology and stereology) of the male testis of albino rats using quantitative and qualitative methods were adopted to study. Forty-eight male wistar rats were divided into four groups designated as control, A, B and C and administered daily by gavage with 1 ml distilled water, 100 mg/kg, 300 mg/kg and 500 mg/kg of ethanolic ginger extract respectively for 30 days. Animals were kept in standard conditions in accordance with the National Institute of Health Guidelines for Care and Use of Laboratory animals. At the end of the treatment periods, the rats were euthanized and the testes were prepared for tissue processing. Result for control and extract-treated male rats showed normal morphology of the testes. However, in the extract-treated animals, there was a considerable increase in the proportion of the connective tissue septa of the interstitial tissues between the seminiferous tubules. We conclude that there was a significant increase in the total volume fraction of the seminiferous tubule in treated rats in a dose dependant manner. Ginger may therefore be useful in maintaining and improving testicular tissue and volume in albino rats.
