Abstract

The present work investigates guilt in the mother-daughter relationship, based on the psychoanalytic framework, with the aim of understanding how guilt can become an element that makes it difficult to separate this bond. We performed a comparative analysis through the psychoanalytic literature of the main concepts of Freud regarding femininity. Concepts that are directly associated with the mother-daughter relationship, about hostility and guilt. Kleinian theory, with regard to this relationship, guilt, aggressiveness and reparation. To illustrate these theoretical articulations, we investigated Marina Abramovic's autobiographical memories and chose five works by this artist, from which we were able to explore the elements of her conflicting relationship with her mother. Finally, we made an analysis of their performances as processes of elaboration of these conflicts, of guilt and of the transformation of their creative potential, consequently of their personal maturation. Following Freud and Klein's arguments, about the concepts of aggressiveness, ambivalence and guilt, we engaged in a dialogue with Winnicott's theory of creativity and Grinberg's about persecutory guilt. Analyzing the theoretical material, we realized that guilt can become an obstacle in the separation between mother and daughter when there are difficulties in the elaboration of ambivalent conflicts, potentiating persecutory and punitive guilt, maintaining the need for punishment. The analysis of the performances allowed us to understand the processes of guilt elaboration by the artist, through her self-punishments, the reconstruction of her memories with her mother and finally of repairs made through the performance field, facilitating her separation from her mother. This research was important to support our theoretical basis and discuss using, in addition to theory, artistic production, to understand how guilt can become an obstacle that makes the separation between mother and daughter difficult.
