Abstract

Vital functions depend on the correct functioning of the oral-maxillo-facial area of the human organism. Several lesions or pathologies alter the symmetry, anatomical morphology and facial physiology of the patients, affecting their quality of life. In dental practice these conditions represent important challenges for the health team. Therefore, new therapeutic approaches are required to repair anatomically and functionally the damaged area, in order to return patients their oral health status. The objective of the present study is to gather recent therapeutic advances aimed at oral-maxillo-facial reconstruction.
In some cases surgical treatments turn to the placement of customized prosthetic devices which allow proper correction of these alterations. Thus, it is important to develop protocols aimed to design the prostheses considering the anatomical parameters of the patients, their placement and the comprehensive approach to each case.
Tissue engineering proposes new strategies for regeneration or replacement of tissues or organs, restoring the shape and function to the affected area. Many of these therapeutic approaches are based on stem cells since they could make the difference in promoting tissue acceleration and regeneration in clinical practice.
With the prospect of being implemented in the field of oral-maxillo-facial reconstruction, these developments could have positive effects on patient´s care, impacting on population health.
