Abstract

Plants are valuable sources of a vast array of chemical compounds which are synthesized and accumulated in various parts of plant body. The uses of traditional medicinal plants for primary health care have steadily increased worldwide in recent years. Hence, an attempt was made to analyze the organoleptic, physico-chemical evaluation, phytochemical analysis and to quantify some bioactive compounds by HPLC analysis, antioxidant activity, antimicrobial activity and cytotoxicity of Alternanthera ficoidea L. leaves. Organoleptic analyses were done based on sensory evaluation. Results of the study showed that the   presence of physiological and non physiological ash adhering to plant surface by physicochemical evaluations (loss on drying, ash values, extractive value). Functional properties are important in the food system for creation of new products. Solubility test was done using different solvents viz., aqueous, ethanol, ethyl acetate, hexane, petroleum ether, acetone, chloroform and methanol. The study revealed the presence of primary and secondary phyto-compounds like carbohydrates, protein, saponins, tannins, terpenoids, alkaloids, flavonoids, phenolic compounds in alcoholic, methanolic and aqueous extracts of A.  ficoidea L. The presence of polyphenols was confirmed by differentiation of their retention times and corresponding of UV spectra with standard compounds. The extracts showed good antioxidant property due to presence of greater amount of phenolic compound. Methanolic leaf extracts showed antibacterial and antifungal activity because of the presence of secondary bioactive compounds. Cytotoxic effect of plant extracts was observed against MCF 7 and MDAMB-231 cell lines.  We can conclude that the plant A. ficoidea may serve as potential drugs to treat various life threatening diseases.
