Abstract

Microbiome are beneficial bacteria which reside in the body of an individual. They are found in gut, intestine as well as on the skin. They play a major role in digestive system as well as in immune system. In forensic analysis, microbiome can be used to differentiate between individuals as each individual has a unique microbiome profile. Microbiome of an individual can be obtained from different sources like saliva, skin, faeces, and many others. In some criminal procedure cases, a criminal might have used a phone. Which could have left traces of skin microbiome on phone. Microbiome profiling of suspects can be compared with the microbiome profile obtained from phone. It will lead to the identification of an individual through microbiome analysis. The benefit of using microbiome over DNA typing is that, the bacterial DNA is more stable and less prone to degradation by environment as compared to human DNA, Moreover, they can also be used to count the time of death of any dead body. Moreover, forensic analysis of microbiome can also aid in solving the cases which involve bioterrorism. Apart from that, microbiome based forensic analysis has quite positive future as it can be used in solving the cases which are sometimes unsolvable through human DNA analysis alone.
