Abstract

A study was conducted to measure and understand the pattern of perceived stress levels in working and non working women between age groups 21-50 years old. This was conducted for understanding the current perceived stress pattern in Jaipur, an Indian metropolitan city and to make a comparison of perceived stress levels in the Covid-19 pandemic. Data was collected using the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS) which is the most widely used psychological instrument for measuring the perception of stress. The sample for the study was chosen from 26 number of non working women & 24 number of working women from Jaipur on a random basis. The results indicated that in the total sample, the perceived stress is on moderate level. This could possibly be due to the effects of the pandemic and related stressors such as anxiety, worry, apprehension. It was found that women were able to cope with the stressors of the pandemic via defence mechanisms or better ability to adapt to the changing situations of restrictions and lockdowns. When compared, there was no significant difference between stress levels of working women & non working women, either indicating that there are common stressors affecting both of them or similar stressors affecting them. The gender/ occupation/ age/ working condition does not differentiate the perceived stress currently.
