Abstract

Background: Anemia is a global public health problem affecting particularly pregnant women. Almost two-thirds of the pregnant mothers from the global prevalence are anemic in developing countries. The magnitudeof anemia is higher in Ethiopia and a much lower magnitudes found in St. Paul and TikurAnbesa Hospitals in Addis Ababa. In spite of the wider scope of the problem, little research data has been explored about magnitude and determinants of anemia at ANC in study area.
Objective: To assess the magnitude of anemia and its associated factors among pregnant women attending antenatal care in Yekatit 12 Hospital, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
Methodology: An institutional based cross-sectional study was employed among 446 systematically selected mothers from October 20/2021-December 15/2021, in Addis Ababa. Data were collected using face-to-face interviewing techniques.  Binary logistic regression was used as final model for the outcome variable. Independent variables which show the P-value less than or equal to 0.25 were entered into multivariable logistic regression, to identify significant factors associated with outcome variables. Finally, adjusted odds ratio (AOR) with 95% confidence intervals was used to show the strength of the association.
Results: The overall prevalence of anemia was10.8% [95 % CI: 8.1, 13.9].Gestational age (trimester), mother occupation, husband educational, number of antenatal visits attended during current pregnancy, compliant with your supplement despite side effects, history of any complication during last pregnancy were statistically associated with anemia.
Conclusion: The overall prevalence of anemia in pregnancy was low.Gestational age (trimester), mother occupation, husband educational, number of antenatal visits attended during current pregnancy, compliant with your supplement despite side effects, history of any complication during last pregnancy were statistically associated with anemia. Therefore, health education to create awareness about the importance of early starting for antenatal care are recommended to reduce anemia
