Abstract

Background: The tales of death in the hands of kidnappers in the southeast of Nigeria, without commensurate action by the government of the day, have not only made it look as if security is no longer the responsibility of the governmentUnfortunately, government efforts to combat insecurity seem to have fallen short by not providing a secure and safe environment for lives, properties and the conduct of business and economic activities in Nigeria. This research was designed to determine how insecurity has impeded attitudes to family planning services for women and families inhabiting Imo State, Nigeria.
Method: This study employed a descriptive cross-sectional design and utilized a structured questionnaire for data collection. A multistage sampling procedure was used to achieve a sample of 382 and data were entered into SPSS version 23.0 for analysis.
Results:  About 39% of those surveyed were aged between 45-49 years. Negative attitudinal disposition towards family planning and birth spacing was recorded with 35.8% disagreeing with its use to increase the time interval between childbirths while 23.6% (90) approved of the usage of contraceptives to limit and space their children.
Conclusion: Majority of the participants had negative attitudes towards family planning in the face of the security challenges.
