Abstract

Transport is the blood life of any economy as it plays a pivotal role of moving goods/services and people from one point to the other. However, in the process of making goods and services available logistically, negative externalities have been tolerated. The road sector is the highest contributor to environmental pollution largely because of the volume of vehicles on the road, the model of vehicles (petrol, diesel, electric), their ages, engine type and operating conditions. In order to achieve sustainable development, the corporate world and individuals must be aware of these effects and take corrective action before it is too late. Common negative effects of transport operations are noise pollution, air pollution (carbon footprint), environmental degradation, and depletion of land. The main objective of this study is to establish how much has been known about the impact of transportation on the environment. Sub-objectives are; (i) to find the impact of transport on the environment,(ii) to establish the level reached so far in solving problems associated with transportation of goods/services and people on the environment and (iii) to highlight challenges faced in implementing solutions. Literature was reviewed for the period 1998 to 2019 to find out what has been published about transport effects on the environment. Secondary data will be used to identify concepts proffered so far in trying to solve the impact of transport on the environment. Findings and conclusions will be used to give a general understanding and agreement of the effects of transport on environment.
