Effectiveness of Electronic TB Information, Education and Communication Display Screen: A Case of Naitiri Sub County Hospital, Kenya

Abstract

Background: Information ,Education and Communication (IEC) is a set of public health approaches aiming at changing, reinforcing health-related behavior in a target audience, concerning a specific problem and within a specified period of time, through a communication method and principles. The objective of the project is to assess the effectiveness of Electronic TB IEC display screen as a tool for igniting health action in TB control, empowerment of communities and social mobilization.
Interventions: Animated short and specific TB information, blended with pictures and videos, relevant background sounds and songs loaded in portable disks were prepared and played repeatedly on facility installed television screen for 60 days from August and September 2017. Through a customer satisfaction survey, 190 participants were interviewed and rated the media on its effectiveness based on its consistency, entertainability, environmental friendliness, visibility and programmability. Results were tabulated and analysed.
Results and lessons Learnt: Electronic IEC Display Screen was rated by respondents as 88% consistent, 58.4% entertainablility, 56.3% environmental friendly and 72% visible. Overall, the Display Screen was rated as 69.6% effective IEC.
The screen being strategically placed at the reception area, it ignited attention of the facility visitors promoting urges to watch, read and listen than posters on the walls. It can be an innovative tool for informing, educating and communicating public health.
To achieve more effective screen, it requires teamwork to design adequate display content, choose proper colours and control proper sound and identify and install adequate screens at the facility.
Conclusion: Being programmable, portable and durable, the screen can be used by any institution as a tool for health promotion and communication and reducing costs of running programs with further developments to suit a targeted population; an experience in commercial sector.
