Abstract

A quasi experimental study was done to evaluate the Effectiveness of multi-component therapy on knowledge and attitude towards self care among patients with ischemic heart disease in outpatient department of selected hospitals at Kollam. The Objectives were to assess the knowledge and attitude towards self care among patients with ischemic heart disease, to assess the effectiveness of multi-component therapy on knowledge and attitude towards selfcare among patients with ischemic heart disease, to find out the association between multi-component therapies with selected demographic variable. Conceptual frame work used was General System Theory by Ludwig Von Bertalanffy. Quantitative research approach was selected with Quasi experimental nonequivalent pretest post test control group design. Purposive sampling was used. Sample size 60, 30 each in experimental and control group. Screening test was done for accessible population using screening criteria. Pretest was conducted for both experimental and control group on first day followed by implementing multi-component therapy and 14th day post test were conducted. The multi-component therapy provided only experimental group, with 1 hour time duration in each patients, no interventions was given for control group. The findings of the study were that, mean between post test knowledge and attitude score of experimental and control group (P<0.05) indicates that there is a significant increase knowledge and attitude of experimental group self care among patient with ischemic heart disease in out patient department of selected hospitals after multi-component therapy. The association between knowledge and attitude score with various demographic variables shows 0.05 level of significance and it shows there is a significant association between knowledge and attitude score and demographic variables like education and occupation except age in years, sex, diet, habits, body weight. Present study suggests the need for multi-component therapy to improve the knowledge and attitude towards self care among patient with ischemic heart disease.
