Abstract

Background: Congenital defects of the female reproductive tract result from failure in the proper embryological development and fusion of the Müllerian ducts. These anomalies are especially important because, in addition to creating fertility problems, they cause clinical symptoms that impact quality of life.
Objectives: The objectives of the study are to determine the prevalence of female congenital anomaly, mode of presentation, treatment modalities and outcome.
Methodology: It was a ten year retrospective study carried out at the Obstetrics and Gynaecology Department of the Usmanu Danfodiyo University Teaching Hospital, Sokoto between January, 2009 to December, 2018. The total number of patients with female genital tract congenital abnormality that attended the gynaecological clinic during the study period were recruited and relevant information obtained. The data collected was analysed using Statistical Software for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 20. The results were summarised on frequency tables and charts.
Result: Out of 40,828 total gynaecological consultations during the study period, 28 (0.07%.) cases of genital tract congenital anomalies were managed. Their ages ranged between 3 to 35 years with modal age of 13 years and a mean of 18.92 years ±6.52. All the patients (100%) were Hausa/Fulani and Muslim and 52% (13/25) of them were married at the time of presentation.  Majority, 76% had primary amenorrhea,  transverse vaginal septum is the most common, 40% (10/25) form of congenital abnormality seen among the study population, among which excision and drainage was more prevalent , 48% (12/25). The main treatment modality, 60% (15/25) is surgical with up to 52% (13/25) satisfaction.
Conclusion: The most prevalent congenital anomally in our environment is transverse vaginal septum.
