Abstract

Knowledge about neighbour is essential to have peaceful existence- That’s about antrum pathology. The maxillary sinus is the paranasal sinus that impacts most on the work of the maxillofacial surgeons, as it often requires making a diagnosis in relation to orofacial pain that may be sinogenic in origin. An important step in the consideration and management of antrum disease is accurate diagnosis. To reach this goal one must be well versed with the type of tissue that is present in the normal antrum, as a diseased or pathologic tissue is nothing but a modification of the normal.

Aim: This paper aims to analyse the disease processes involving the paranasal sinuses and challenges faced in particular multifaceted outcome of maxillary sinus pathology.

Case and Management:  Seven different cases of suspected maxillary sinus pathology which reported to our Oral & maxillofacial outpatient department of Bokaro general Hospital, Jharkhand were considered in this case series. In all cases specific signs and symptoms that can be suggestive of maxillary sinus pathology were ruled out first via clinical examination and then radiological investigations were done. Occipito-mental plain x-ray film view, Panaromic radiographs were helpful to rule out whether the disease was dental or sinogenic origin. For five cases Computed tomography scan and Magnetic resonance imaging was also done to rule out extent of pathology. Suspected cases were sent for histopathological examination to rule out any neoplastic activity occurring. The diagnosed cases were managed and treated medically or surgically (Caldwell luc) with a positive outcome.

Conclusion: The outcome is to encourage comprehensive history taking and examination of the patient to facilitate an accurate diagnosis that will enable successful treatment.
