Abstract

Medicinal plants are predominantly used as food supplements. Chicory (Cichorium intybus) is from the Asteraceae family which is a biennial/perennial herbaceous plant and the stems and leaves are usually eaten as salads, while the roots are taken as quasi coffee after roasting since there is similarity between the taste of chicory to coffee taste and it is free from caffeine. One of the most essential phenolic compounds in chicory is the Chicoric acid also known as dicaffeyltertaric acid and it is use for the treatment of AIDS, thus it serves as an anti-AIDS agent. Inulin from chicory is a natural fructan that has a tendency of providing nutritional and health benefits when modified with oligo-fructose than when it is in a pure form. Previous studies have proposed that chicory inulin enriched with oligo-fructose improves calcium absorption and promotes bone maker the intestines of healthy post-menopausal women. Supplements of chicory help reduce iron overload and aids proper functioning of liver. Research has shown that increased intestinal gram-negative bacteria load in persons with diabetes can be linked to the issue of higher lipopolysaccharide (LPS) production that is a structural compound in gram negative bacteria. Hence, data obtained by indicate that chicoric acid can decrease acute alcohol induced steatosis in mice via induction of of iNOS and iNOS-dependent signalling cascades in the liver when it is altered. The purpose of this paper is to review the benefits of chicory (Cichorium intybus) as a medicinal plant. To elaborate the role of medicinal plant in the society and the effect of consuming chicory in large proportions. Although, chicory is highly rich with large amounts of bioactive compounds. There is need to explore the plant in order to understand its effect and potential benefits.
