Abstract

A worldwide etiological agent of both acute and chronic liver disease is the hepatitis B virus (HBV). The purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence of HBV infection in district Mardan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), Pakistan. The Immune Chromatography Technique (ICT) was used to check for antibodies in the blood samples from 1054 people. 3.07 percent of 1054 serum samples tested positive for HBV infection. The samples were taken from a total of 5 hospitals, with Mardan Medical Complex (MMC) having the highest prevalence value (35.29%) and Rural Health Center Shergarh having the lowest prevalence (7.40%). Males had a prevalence of the Hepatitis B virus of 4.25%, while females had a prevalence of 3.33%. The overall rate of the hepatitis B virus was high in urban areas 4.45% as matched to the rural areas 3.45%. Hepatitis B prevalence was higher overall in married individuals (69%), compared to lower levels in unmarried people (31%). Hepatitis B virus prevalence was highest in the age range of 31–45 (5.41%), and lowest in the age group of 1–15 (0%). In overall samples a total of 22.29% were vaccinated while 77.70% was unvaccinated. In this area, necessary steps for the control of the infection should be agreed upon. This study's objectives were to ascertain the prevalence of the hepatitis B virus and to inform people about its negative effects.
