Factors Influencing Medical and Health Sciences Students Anxiety during the COVID-19 Pandemic

Abstract

Background:The novel coronavirus (COVID-19) became a household name all over the world. The epidemic has brought the risk of a tremendous psychological pressure.The additional stress placed on students has left some struggling to manage their mental health during home quarantines, social distancing, and responsibilities of online learning and missed milestones. It was estimated that approximately 6% to 37.5% of medical students across all years of study were reported to suffer from depression
Objective: To assess the level of anxiety among medical and health science students during COVID-19 pandemic and to examine the factors influencing their anxiety during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Methods:A descriptive cross sectional study was conducted on total of 297 students from Ras Al Khaimah medical and health sciences Colleges over a period of 3 months using an anonymous web based self-administrative questionnaire through their emails.The questionnaire consisted of; Demographic characteristics (age, gender), stressors and coping mechanisms and Generalized Anxiety Disorder 7-item (GAD-7) scale.
Results: Results have showed that only 36% of the studied sample have received psychological counselling during the COVID -19 pandemic while 86.5% have received enough information regarding the pandemic. Mean score of anxiety level was: 6.59±4.7 on the (GAD-7) scale. Significant relationship was found between the level of anxiety with sleeping hours, having time management plan, getting enough information about COVID pandemic and doing prayers.
Conclusion: This study provides important information about demographic characteristics, habits and anxiety levels among medical university students during the COVID-19 pandemic. The findings from the study can be used to provide effective support strategies to build psychological resilience among university students during any future public health emergency.
