Enormous advancement in the field of science and technology thoroughly alter the global scenario in present years. Technology, from its inception has been utilized in the development of commodities. Of late, the same technology is being also used in the biological sphere. This is a new area of research in biotechnology which deals with the technological issues related to biology. Although biotechnology has a vast area of research among which this paper encompasses only genetic engineering. Genetic engineering refers to artificial modification of gene or manipulation of gene for creating a better race. Genetic engineering consists of techniques to isolate gene, modify it for better functioning. Stem cell research shows a new pathway to treat life-threating diseases like Parkinson, Alzheimer, diabetes, schizophrenia etc. Artificial reproduction is another kind of advancement of genetic engineering which attracts our attention that not only engaged to test tube baby production but also to the creation of designer baby. These revolutionary activities in the domain of science and technology bring remarkable changes in our thought that certainly go against the nature. But at the same time this kind of research has highlighted some ethical tensions. Significant ethical questions are: stem cells are created out of embryo and embryo has life or consciousness in it. After extracting the stem cell from the embryo, what would be the existential and ethical status of that embryo? Does it not involve a lot of social exploitation? Again, the question can also be raised about the moral status of the embryos as they are treated only as means for an end. Artificial reproduction also raises some ethical issues: the concept of pedigree becomes meaningless. The concept of designer baby rejects the autonomy of a possible moral agent as the baby is a product of a consumer designed by the parents. In this paper, I would like to focus on these ethical issues related to the research of genetic engineering and try to provide some effective answers.
