Drivers of staff Performance in some Selected Secondary Schools in Mezam Division of Cameroon

Abstract

In every organization, work is done through the effort of human beings. This explains why the issue of effectively motivating the human capital for better performance is increasingly becoming very important. The employees are the most important asset in an organization, without which the goals of the organization will not be attained. This paper will examine the drivers of staff performance in some selected secondary schools in Mezam Division. Data was collected through questionnaire administration wherein 716 questionnaires were administered to nine randomly selected secondary schools in Mezam Division in which 498 questionnaires were received in return. The data was analyzed using the Maximum Likelihood of Partial Least Square technique. It was discovered that financial motivation has a significant positive effect on staff performance while non-financial motivation has a strong significant positive effect on staff performance. We therefore suggest that the pay packages of teachers serving in Government, Confessional and Lay Private Secondary schools in Cameroon should be increased in order to improve on their performance. We equally call on proprietors of Confessional and lay private secondary schools to register their staff in the National Social Insurance Fund so that they can have retirement benefits when they go on retirement. Lastly, school administrators should involve their staff in decision making as well as encourage them to attend pedagogic seminars in order to improve on their teaching skills.
