Abstract

The agricultural sector is the most important sector in the Ethiopian economy, which contributes 34.9% to GDP, 90% of export earnings and 67.3% of employment. Ethiopia is the second largest wheat producers in Sub-Saharan Africa next to South Africa, with a potential expansion to 1.3 million hectares. Wheat is one of the most important crops grown in Amhara Region, particularly Debere Elias Woreda. Therefore, this study was conducted to assess production and marketing support services and investigate factors affecting the volume of wheat marketed supply. A total of 154 respondents were selected using three stage random sampling technique to collect primary data to address the objectives of this study. The collected data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, inferential statistics and econometric model. The result indicated that market access, market information, credit access and extension services are the most important supportive services to promote production and marketing of wheat in the study area. Likewise, multiple linear regression model was applied to investigate determinants of volume of wheat marketed supply. The result indicated that educational status, land size allocated to wheat production, market information, quantity of wheat produced, lagged market prices and credit access had significant effect on volume of wheat marketed supply. To increase the capacity of wheat producers, decision makers, woreda agriculture office experts and wheat producers should give special attention to significant explanatory variables to increase the quantity of wheat supplied to the market. Moreover, financial institutions should design a mechanism to address challenges of financial constraints.
