Electric stimulation can be a potential adjuvant to improve the therapeutic outcomes for the management of COVID-19. The “inflammatory reflex” as immune-inflammatory processes are modulated by the vagus nerve and vagus nerve modulation may tackle the COVID-19-associated cytokine storm. The stimulation of the vagus nerve modulates immune response through the nuclear factor kappa-light-chain-enhancer of activated B cells (NF-κB) pathway, capable of inducing antiviral host factors and viral genes in the pathogenesis of severe/cases.Vagus nerve stimulation is achieved by neuromodulatory approaches as invasive VNS (iVNS), using a specifically designed surgically implantable electrode cuff, wrapped around the cervical vagus nerve or non-invasive astranscutaneous cervical VNS (tcVNS), where the stimulating electrodes are applied to the skin surface over the sternocleidomastoid muscle in the neck, and the other, the auricular VNS, which targets the auricular branch of the vagus nerve that innervates the skin of outer ear, mainly theconcha and auditory meatus. Auricular vagus nerve modulation with SPN (auricular acupuncture using semipermanent needles (SPNs) could lead to a decrease in the host inflammatory response and SARS-COV-2replication through modulation of this NF-κBsignalling pathway.
