Propolis Gel: A Therapeutic Alternative for Bone Repair

Abstract

Mucoadhesive gels and the phenomenon of mucoadhesiveness have developed in recent decades, particularly in Pharmaceutical Technology, since when incorporated into various pharmaceutical forms, they cause an increase in the residence time of the drug in the place of absorption, prolonging the effectiveness of the drug. Propolis is a natural product made by honey bees (Apis mellifera) from the shoots and exudates of different plants, it has been used in traditional medicine since ancient times, due to its biological properties.
Objective: Preparation of propolis mucoadhesive gels to evaluate its effect on the repair place in bone repair.
Methods: A gel was prepared with carboxymethyl cellulose (2 g) and propylene glycol in a sterile container. The diluent in a final gel concentration of 4% (propylene glycol and water). The required concentration of the active principle propolis at 60% was dissolved in that volume. It was left to rest for 24 hours. It was mixed during that time until all the ingredients dissolved well. The hydroxypropylmethyl cellulose gel was placed in a sterile container with the diluent in a final gel concentration of 4% (propylene glycol and water). The required concentration of the active principle Propolis 60% was dissolved in that volume. Hydroxypropylmethyl cellulose (2 g) was added slowly with gentle mixing to avoid clumping and air bubbles. It was left to rest for 24 hours, mixing during that time until all the ingredients dissolved well. Both carboxymethyl cellulose and hydroxypropylmethyl cellulose gels with the humectant were prepared without active ingredient. The bottles were labeled with the active principle, concentration and type of gel. Date of elaboration was set. They were prepared applying good manufacturing practices. Bacteriological controls were carried out: b. aerobic ufc / product fungi-yeast ufc / product.
Results: Both the carboxymethyl cellulose gel and the hydroxypropyl methyl cellulose gel were negative for both bacteriological studies.
