Abstract

Industrial effluents contain organic and inorganic matter in various concentrations and also contain toxic components that are non-biodegradable. Rivers are the primary means for disposal of effluents from nearby industries. These effluents cause pollution of the water body and can alter the physical, chemical and biological nature of water. The percolation of heavy metals through soil can disperse into groundwater.  The pollution of ground water is a subject of a major concern because of its increasing utilization for human needs and secondly because of the ill effects of the increased industrial activity specially in the urban climate. The discharge of waste water from industries such as dyeing, tanneries, paper and pulp, textile, petroleum, chemical industries etc pollute water bodies. Dyes at very low concentrations reduce water transparency and oxygen solubility are often toxic, carcinogenic and mutagenic for various organisms.  Plants are excellent receptors and accumulators of metals. Absorption of metals varies with the plant species and different parts of the plants. Analysis of plant tissues such as leaves, twigs, wood and bark show elevated metal content at polluted sites. Aerial parts of the plants can easily capture trace metals, while roots absorb metallic compounds. The quality and composition of soil can affect irrigated agricultural fields and heavy metals can get accumulated. This can cause serious health hazards to animals and human beings by consuming directly or through food products. The study carried out shows the concentration of sodium, potassium and calcium ions in post rainy season in Ahmedabad district which affects water and plant growth. Major treatment plants are required to handle primary and tertiary treatment for complete removal of all types of pollutants.
