Abstract

Background: The public has a high interest in preventing or removing external stains from teeth to make teeth whiter. The universal method of teeth cleaning to date that is done is brushing your teeth using toothpaste. Whitening ingredients in non-herbal toothpaste are known to cause unwanted side effects such as irritation, allergies and mucosal ulceration. Research reveals that miswak contains a high concentration of silica that makes the color of teeth brighter. Some other herbal ingredients that can be used as teeth whitening ingredients are also charcoal. Objective: This study aimed to determine the effectiveness of non-herbal whitening toothpaste, miswak herbal (Salvadora persica), and activated charcoal herbal (Charcoal) on tooth enamel discoloration. Methods: Laboratory experimental research with a research sample of 40 premolar teeth. The sample was divided into 4 groups, namely the treatment group brushed with miswak herbal toothpaste, activated charcoal herbal toothpaste, non- herbal toothpaste and the control group soaked in aquades, each treatment group was brushed for 14 days, then the sample was measured. Results: Miswak herbal toothpaste, activated charcoal herbal toothpaste, non-herbal toothpaste and the control group had an increase in the value of tooth discoloration score on the 14th day. Conclusion: Non-herbal toothpaste is more effective in whitening tooth enamel compared to miswak herbal toothpaste (Salvadora persica). However, the difference is not significant.
