Abstract

Background- Immunization is most successful and cost-effective interventions in preventative health care. Factors such as knowledge, attitude, and practices (KAP) of parents contribute to the success or failure of the immunization program. Information about KAP about immunization is lacking in developing countries.  Main reasons include ignorance of community participation in routine immunization and IEC activities. The rationale behind the study as immunization is very essential as it can protect the children from several deadly diseases. It is the mother who should be aware to get her child immunized according to the national immunization schedule. Therefore, this study was done.
Objectives- To assess the knowledge attitude and practices of mothers about immunization (upto one year) and its importance for their children of under 5 age group. To find out the association of socio demographic characteristics with the knowledge about immunization (upto one year).
Material and Methods- Hospital based cross sectional study was for a period of 6 months across all the out-patient department were mothers of children under 5 years of age attending the OPD’s were selected. Self-designed, pre-tested, semi structured, interview questionnaire was used as a study tool. Epi-info software was used for analysis and chi-square test was used.
Results- The study depicts knowledge was good in 3%, fair in 65% and poor in 30% of mothers. Similarly, attitude is good 51%, moderate 44%, poor 5%. Practice was found to be good in 66%, fair 25%, poor 9%. 81% pf mothers prefer government setting and 19% prefer private setting for immunization.
Conclusion- Counselling of mothers about immunization at the time of birth and at immunization outpatient departments must be done. Use of digital communications like television display in hospital making people acknowledged about immunization through advertisements.
