Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic has swept across the globe devastatingly causing high morbidity, mortality and bringing in its way chaos, uncertainty, social and economic problems and a myriad of psychological problems which may contribute to a significant loss of productivity in the post pandemic society. Physical and mental health are equally important and interdependent on each other. It is important to identify and treat mental health problems faced by general population, frontline workers(health care professionals, police etc),  COVID-19 victims and their family members and the at risk population (pregnant women and geriatric age group). Mental health problems can be in the form of Depressive Disorder, Anxiety Disorder (Panic disorder, PTSD), Acute Stress Reaction, Suicide and DSH, Substance Abuse and Domestic Violence. Adding to this, a number of preexisting psychiatric disorders like OCD, Germophobia and Hypochondriasis can get exacerbated. Many chronic psychiatric patients may be rendered homeless because of death or inability of caregivers to care for them. Physical, sexual and emotional abuse and neglect in children,as well as  Child Trafficking, deserve a special mention. Anewly emerging problem in many countries, albeit more so in developed nations, is that of “vaccine hesitancy” which must be overcome because nobody is safe till all are safe.Along with this, the problem of vaccine discrepancy also needs addressal with some countries on the verge of offering booster shots to susceptible populations while the poorer countries not having received even the first dose of vaccines for their population.Furthermore, the term Post Pandemic seems to have become relative in view of the ever present and the very real threat of  newermutant strains with greater virulence and higher rates of transmission emerging. The limited resources available to us must be optimized and used judiciously during the post pandemic era.
