Abstract

Why sex gets boring? Is decline in passionate love a predictor of sexual boredom? Does the practice of mindfulness have any impact on passionate love and the levels of sexual boredom? The project aims to empirically explore these questions. This quantitative study evaluates dispositional mindfulness (a personality trait of having non-judgemental focussed attention on the present moment, feelings or thoughts) as a moderator of relationship between sexual boredom and passionate love. In the study, 100 Indian heterosexual participants, age between 22 to 51 years (Mean age= 36 years) were surveyed using Passionate Love Scale (PLS- 30), Five-Factor Mindfulness Questionnaire (FFMQ-15) and Sexual Boredom Scale (SBS-18). Analytical model was built using the R-software. Simple linear regression analyses found that decline in passionate love predicted sexual boredom (Passionate Love Score -0.61023 0.03986 -15.31 <2e-16, p<.001, RSME=.18). The repetition of the accuracy test on Microsoft Excel showed 92% accuracy of the model. Regression used for analysis of dispositional mindfulness as a moderating factor of sexual boredom indicated that positive changes in levels of mindfulness have negative impact on the levels of sexual boredom. Correlation analysis demonstrated that passionate love and mindfulness are positively correlated to one another and negatively correlated with sexual boredom. The overarching aim of the project is to contribute to a better understanding of the actual state experience of sexual boredom and its psychological dynamics. By testing the impact of mindfulness, project aims to lay the groundwork for investigating the efficacy of mindfulness as an antidote to sexual boredom. Since, the past research correlates sexual boredom with relationship conflict, infidelity, and compulsively risky sexual behaviour; the proposed project has applied implications for society at large. To the best of the researcher’s knowledge, this is the first study in this regard.
