Abstract

Alzheimer’s is a neurodegenerative disease that is irreversible and dynamic. Severe loss of memory, personality changes, abnormal behavior and decline in intellectual ability are the main features of this disease. This disease is associated with age. There is no cure yet for Alzheimer’s, but symptomatic treatment can improve memory and other issues related to the disease. It is believed that the onset or progression of Alzheimer’s disease can be postponed by making medical interventions and will dramatically reduce the number of cases over the next coming 50 years. The arid zone is one of the most fragile ecosystems in the world, and has become more fragile due to the increasing over exploitation of scarce resources and periodic droughts. Some diseases, which have not yet been found to have any satisfactory control in allopathy, such as neurological disorders, heart diseases, cancer, AIDS, arthritis, bronchial asthma, diabetes, etc. Plants of dry region are also being explored for the development of medicines to cure such diseases. Products from the arid region, such as medicinal plants have long been used for healing. Like amnesia, dementia, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s etc. The use of medicinal plants has been shown in various studies to treat Alzheimer’s. However, their exact mode of action is still unclear. Phytochemical investigations of various dry zone plant parts have revealed the presence of many bioactive compounds such as polyphenols, tannins, flavonoids, triterpenes, alkaloidsand sterols. These compounds exhibit a variety of pharmacological activities such as anticholinesterase, antiinflammatory, antimyeloidogenic, hypolipidemic and antioxidant. etc. This review provides a description of various medicinal plants against Alzheimer’s disease that have shown promise in reversing Alzheimer’s disease pathology. These reports summarize information related to substantial biological and cellular activities and clinical applications of these various plants, which can be used in drug discovery campaigns and development process, providing new functional clues for Alzheimer’s disease.
