Abstract

Breast cancer is a type of cancer that is commonly found in women in Indonesia. The poor prognosis has an impact on the difficulty of medical personnel in choosing the type of therapy or treatment. This is motivated by the delay in women with signs and symptoms of breast cancer getting a diagnosis at the initial examination, thus contributing to the low life expectancy of breast cancer patients. This study aims to explore the factors that influence the behavior of women with breast cancer in making decisions that have an impact on late diagnosis. This study used an analytic observational design with qualitative methods. The data were obtained from in-depth interviews with a number of women with breast cancer who were undergoing treatment at Baladhika Husada Hospital, Jember. The results showed that several factors influenced the delay in diagnosis which were divided into behavioral theories including predisposing factors (education, fear, values and traditions in society and beliefs and beliefs), enabling factors (income and alternative medicine) and reinforcing factors (pain and BSE early detection behavior). There needs to be a program that focuses on more in-depth and evenly distributed socialization or counseling related to information about breast cancer including signs and symptoms, medical treatment procedures, directions for the use of herbal therapy or alternative medicine as a second choice after medical. values and traditions in society and beliefs and beliefs), enabling factors (income and alternative medicine) and reinforcing factors (pain and early detection of BSE).
