Abstract

A woman’s health differs from a man’s health because of her unique biological, physiological, physical, psychological and social parameters. Health issues such as menopause, osteoporosis, breast cancer, eating disorders, depression and dementia are more prevalent in the fair sex. As accepted by the society that ‘a woman’s health is the health of the population’, it becomes extremely important that a woman’s fitness is not ignored. Though several advancements in the medical field are made to look into prevention of illness amongst women, it is the traditional knowledge which would effectively cater to the preservation of wellness amongst women. The best traditional practice is YOGA which can be healing for woman at any stage of her life. Citing as example are the three distinct phases in a woman’s life – the adolescence, the motherhood and the golden years. As a girl in teens, a woman has lot of energy and bodily changes show up. She wants to remain in shape warding off obesity. In the reproductive phase, her body and mind requirements are distinct, body should remain supple and mind should remain relaxed. From adolescence to a retired or superannuated woman, the journey is full of challenges. The energy starts to deplete, the bones stiffen, and the mind becomes chattered with thoughts. However, a mentally healthy and alert woman would love to age gracefully and remain beautiful always.
While yoga is a means of keeping the body agile and supple, meditation calms our mind and soul. In meditation we are at total peace with ourselves and attain power of concentration. If meditation is practiced with a regulated breathing pattern, it becomes a powerful tool against stress. Asanas such as Dhanurasana and Vajrasana are ideal for women to help them develop a regular and healthy menstrual cycle. A mature woman can practice stretch asana and asanas that are for good blood circulation.
